Four Easy Steps to a Custom Recipe Card Box

from:

Have you been looking for the perfect box to hold your family recipes? Sure, you could buy a generic one at your local discount store, but you'd rather have one that really suits your decorating style. And it would be nice if your recipe card box was coordinated to the rest of the accessories in your kitchen.

You can create a recipe card box that fits all of your needs in just a few short hours. The supplies are readily available at most craft stores for a few dollars and you only need a few basic craft skills. You'll need the following items for your project:

  • Two feet of wallpaper border (preferably leftover from your kitchen border)
  • An unfinished wooden box that is the appropriate size for your recipe cards
  • A sponge paintbrush
  • Acrylic craft paint that coordinates with the wallpaper border
  • A small screwdriver

Once you've collected all of the required supplies, you're ready to start working on your box. Carve a few hours out of your busy schedule and get to work. Follow these steps to complete your recipe card box:

1) Remove the hardware that came with the box. This includes the hinges, as well as the hasp that holds the box closed. You might consider placing the pieces inside a sandwich bag for safekeeping while you're working on your recipe card box. Those tiny screws can quickly find their way to hiding places under the sofa or in the carpet.

2) Paint the box with the paint you've chosen. Paint the inside and outside of the box. There is a ton of opportunity for creativity in your painting. You might want to paint the interior and exterior of the box different colors. Or maybe you'd like to paint stripes on a portion of the box. Remember that if the paint job doesn't look the way you want it to, you can always paint over it and start again.

Please note that you may need to cover the box with two or three coats of paint to get a deep, rich color. Be sure to let the paint dry before you start the next coat.

3) After the paint has completely dried, you're ready to apply the wallpaper border. Take a minute to evaluate the size of your border and the size of your box. You may need to creatively trim the border to make it fit the height of your box. If you'd rather just use a portion of the border, simply cut out a few motifs from the border. Follow the instructions that came with your wallpaper border to apply it to your box.

4) Replace the hardware that you removed earlier. Take care not to overtighten the screws.

As easy as that, you'll have a personalized home for all of your favorite recipes. Forget hiding your recipe card box behind a cabinet door; you'll proudly display this treasure on your countertop for everyone to see.
